Science Investigation

We wanted to investigate which marker would roll down the ramp the fastest.  We all became scientists and made our predictions in our science journals.  We took notice to details as we were making our predictions such as the differences in the caps of the markers, the length, width, etc.  Nathaniel and Yusef stood at the top of the ramp and the rest of the scientist waited at the bottom of the ramp.  At first, the markers rolled a bit then right off the side.  Our scientists decided that Yusef and Nathaniel should get down closer to the end of the ramp so that they had a better chance to roll to the bottom.  We recorded all results in our science journals.  What a fun investigation!!

Field Trip Forms

Hi parents!  Please remember that all field trip forms are due TOMORROW!!  I need all forms filled out completely with $10 for each child.  Cash only please!

Happy Monday!

Good morning everyone!  Hope you all had a great weekend!

I really enjoyed meeting with many of you on Friday at our Parent/Teacher conferences.  There was one thing that was brought up from several parents....since we are now giving actual number grades in first grade, many of you would like to know what we are learning about in each subject area.  I am going to create a side page on my blog titled "I can".  Every Monday (along with our weekly spelling words) I am going to write what we will be learning about in each subject area.  In our class, we call them "I can" statements and we read them every morning in our morning meeting to remind us what our daily goals are and what we are learning about.  Please check our "I can" goals each week so that you are aware of what we are learning about in school as well as what to work on them with at home.

Thanks all!

Journal Writing

We begin each and everyday with Journal Writing.  They all unpack their belongings then sit at their desks and begin journal writing for 30 minutes.  I play quiet classical music to keep them focused.  This is their time to write their thoughts, their ideas, and their opinions.  I do not give them any writing prompts.  I encourage them to think and write freely because this is what good writers do...here are some of our writers at work...

Lunch

**Please remember that 1st Graders are NOT allowed to heat up their lunch in the cafeteria.  We only have one microwave that is to be used for the older students.  There are too many younger students and simply not enough time to heat up everyone's lunch.  We have a limited amount of time for everyone to eat and I want to be sure that they sit down and eat right away!

I have noticed some students bring their "hot" lunch sealed containers that keep their lunches nice and hot without having to be heated up...great idea:)

Thanks everyone!!

Grades

Hi all!

I wanted to give everyone a heads up with the change that has been made to our 1st Grade grading system.

First grade used to use following in each subject area: Exceeds standard, Meets standard, Approaching standard, or Below standard.  This has changed.  Your child will now be getting actual number grades.  Each student will be graded on ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies on a weekly basis.  These grades will be based on in class assignments, tests, homework, and family take home projects.

You may check your child's progress on the database.

Please let me know if you have any questions.  Thanks so much!!

Accepting Donations:)

Hello all!

We already have some friends in our 1A classroom that have already received their new RED clip for their behavior chart....what an amazing group we have this year!!  If you have any wooden clothespins laying around please feel free to bring them in!  Thanks!!!

Spelling City

Sorry for all the confusion with Spelling City.  If your child wants to work on spellingcity.com please search for "Ginny Coleman" not colemanbaum.  Once you find our site, please remember to scroll down to the bottom to Week 2.  Next week scroll down to Week 3 and so on.  Also, if they are doing work on the website you DO NOT need to print out their work to send to school.  Thanks so much for your patience!

Also please remember that Homework Folders stay at home until the last day of the month.  Your children should be working on their homework daily so it's up to you and your family how you want to keep it organized (ex. what paper you want to use, etc.)  At the end of the month please send back their homework folder with all their work in it throughout the month.

Thanks!!

Spelling Words

I've added our 6 new spelling words to our list on the right side of my blog.  Also, if you log onto spellingcity.com (this is explained in the letter that's going home today) be sure to follow the weeks.  For example, if you log in today, scroll down to the bottom until you see "SPELLING WORDS WEEK 2".

Their first homework packets are going home in their new homework folders.  You will keep these at home until the end of the month  and then your child can bring in their entire month's homework on the last day of the month.

Thanks all!!
